Working at Sierra at Tahoe

Located three hours east of San Francisco, the Sierra at Tahoe ski resort is one of Lake Tahoe's premier ski resorts, promising skiers and riders nearly 500 inches of snowfall a year. Known for its friendly attitude and commitment to exceed its guests' expectations, customer service is the first thing on Kevin Mitchell's mind when he shows up at the Ski School bell each morning.

Kevin Mitchell is the Director of the Ski and Snowboard School at the Sierra at Tahoe resort and has been teaching people how to ski safely for over 17 years, including 5 years at resorts in the southern hemisphere.

To get an idea of what it's like to pursue a career in professional ski instructing, Kevin agreed to describe a typical day on the mountain - the good and the bad.

Sierra at Tahoe is one of the first resorts that visitors from Sacramento and the Bay Area encounter when driving into the Lake Tahoe area. We have over 2,000 acres of skiable terrain with a summit elevation of 8,852 and a vertical drop of 2,212 feet. We have over 170 ski instructors in our ski school, divided evenly between full and part-time instructors with experience ranging between new instructors to pros who have taught for over 25 years.

Each year, we are approached by a number of experienced and inexperienced ski instructors who would like to teach at our resort and want to know what they can do to get hired. Surprisingly, being an expert skier or rider is not the most important qualification for getting a job as a ski instructor - we can teach any instructor how to become a better skier. What we primarily look for is a positive customer service attitude. Ideally, the new applicant will have a background in recreation, physical therapy or education - some type of experience that demonstrates that they know how to work with people.
